What is a Mom? Happy Mother’s Day!
Hello Friends,
Today is a special day! Do you know what today is? That’s right, it’s Mother’s Day! And on this day we are too pamper our mom’s in every way possible: give them breakfast in bed, cook for them, do the dishes, clean the house, do the laundry, go grocery shopping, and make sure that we keep our mom happy. (If you are like me, I let my older siblings do all these things for our mom while I just sit with her on the couch and either watch “The Lion King” or “Casper.”) If we can’t do these things, that is okay because these gifts don’t measure up to the ultimate gift that we can give our mom. The best give we can give her is the gift of love!
But I ask, “What is a mother?” Is a mom just someone who cleans, who does the dishes, who folds the laundry, who buys your favorite snack from the grocery store? Is your mom just someone who hugs you when your eyes leak, who holds your when you are scared, and who cheers you on from the bleachers as you run around the bases? Is your mom just someone who gets upset with you when you don’t follow the instructions, or gets angry when you do something you aren’t supposed to do, or who makes you sit in time-out? What is a mother or who is your mother? I know that is a silly question to ask because we know who our mom is, but sometimes we forget how special our mom really is. She does way more than what we see: she is like Superwoman, performing all these wonderful magic tricks and flying high in the sky–zooming from one place to the next. She is truly unbelievable!
King Solomon, the son of the great King David, is given advice from his mom about what a woman or mom is. King Solomon in Proverbs 31:10-31 shares that a mother has worth; A mother demonstrates goodness and trust; A mother is hard-working; A mother takes time to plan things out; A mother has been given this divine strength to care for others; A mother is willing to do the ministry of the Lord, opening her hand to all people; A mother offers protection and preparedness;. A mother is supportive; A mother is filled with wisdom, teachings, and love; And a mother is all these things and so much more because she is a gift, a blessing, given to us by God. And our moms give us the best gift of all: love.
The Bible tells us that we are to honor our mother (and father) with love; and this love is defined by the Apostle Paul in his letter to the people of Corinth. Paul said that love never ends. When the breakfast is gone, love is still there. When the dishes are washed and the laundry folded, love is still there. When groceries are put away, love is still there. Love never ends and certainly doesn’t disappear. Love is the greatest gift we can give our mom on Mother’s Day because it will never go away! So on this Mother’s Day, give your mom a hug and tell her that you love her!
So, take some time today and every day to say thank you to your mom, give her a hug, and say “I love you mom!” Happy Mother’s Day to the all the mothers and mother-like figures! May you all receive the best gift of all, love!
Your Friend, Holy Spirit!
A Special Poem for the Mothers: “M” is for the million things she gives me, “O” means the only mom I will ever love, “T” is for the tears she wipes away from my eyes, “H” is for her heart of purest gold, “E” is for her eyes with love-light shining, and “R” means right and right she’ll always be. Put them all together, and they spell “MOTHER,” a word that means the world to me.
