Snowman Faith
Hello Friends!
Did you all have a good week back to school? Were you excited to see your friends and teachers again after being on break for several weeks? I remember when I was about your age and people asked me if I was ready to go back to school after Christmas, I would say, “I am ready to see my friends but I am not ready to have homework again.” Can you believe that some of my teachers even assigned homework during Christmas break….I am pretty sure Santa put them on the naughty list!
Needless to say, I was looking out my window this past week and I thought to myself, “This is the first time in my life that I don’t see snow on the ground in the month of January.” Do you all like snow? I like snow! I like to go sledding, have snow-ball fights, and build a snowman. You know what, just because there is no snow on the ground doesn’t mean we can’t dream of snow! Do you all want to build a snowman?
When you build a snowman, what do you put on it to make it a snowman? A snowman has eyes, a nose, a mouth, a hat, a scarf, and arms. When I build a snowman, I like to use buttons for the eyes and mouth, a carrot for the nose, a top-hat for the hat, an old scarf that my Grandfather gave me for the scarf, and some really big sticks for his arms. Sometimes, I even give the snowman some sunglasses and a pair of drumsticks. This way he is an even cooler snowman! But then, what about a heart? Does a snowman have a heart? You don’t think so?! Why is that? “Because the snowman is not alive and he is cold…”
Just because the snowman is cold doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a heart. The prophet Ezekiel reminds us, that God will give us, followers, new hearts and spirits. Ezekiel writes, “I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh” (Ezekiel 11:19). Maybe the snowman does have a heart but it is like a stone because he is so cold. But God can fix that! God can melt any frozen heart and give somebody a new spirit. (Anybody else thinking of the Frozen movies?!) God can melt us down so that we can be built back up. Do you ever have to add more snow to your snowman to keep it alive? When you do that, you are giving him more love because his heart is filled with warmth that he is melting the snow. The snowman’s heart can be melted just like anyone else’s heart that is made of stone or is cold. God’s love can melt any heart and give anyone a new spirit.
So the next time you build a snowman, don’t forget to give it eyes, a nose, a mouth, arms, a hat, and scarf because all these things make it part of God’s creation just like you and me. Oh, and don’t forget to give the snowman a heart that is filled with lots and lots of love and warmth!
Your Friend, Holy Spirit!
