“Mirror, Mirror, On The Wall”
Hello Friends,
Summer is almost over….and I can’t believe it! It feels like summer just began. I was looking at my summer to do list and there is still so much to do. Speaking of lists, I have noticed recently that some stores and websites are posting school supply lists. Have you bought any school supplies yet? I remember while I was elementary school, I would get my school supplies at least a few weeks in advanced, but by the time I was in High School I usually got my school supplies the weekend before school. But anyway, I hope you are getting excited for school to start!
If you are anything like me, on the first day of school I stood in front of the mirror in my parents bathroom making sure my fresh haircut was looking good. I don’t know why I did that–considering I had short hair–but I did. As think about those days today, I ask myself, “What did I see in the mirror?” As the years have gone by that question has become more and more interesting. I catch myself saying, “Mirror, Mirror, On The Wall…”
In 1937 Walt Disney Productions released the full-length animated film Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs. In the film, the Queen stands before a giant mirror and asks, “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all?” To which the mirror responds, “Thou, O Queen, art the fairest in the land.” Then one day, the mirror said to the Queen, “Snow White, O Queen, is the fairest of them all.” Standing in front of the mirror today, I think about how God created me and you to be the fairest of not just the land but of all things. The reflection that we see in the mirror is something that God created and loves every single day. The reflection that we see in the mirror was created in the image of God: all our scrapes, bruises, tears, smiles, laughs, and goofy facial expressions were created by God. What do you see when you look in a mirror?
As you get ready for the first day of school, as you stand in front of the mirror making sure your hair is perfect, take some time to look at the face that is staring back at you. That face that is staring back at you was created by God to do great things. So as you look into the mirror, say, “Mirror, Mirror, on the wall I am the coolest, smartest, bravest, strongest, and friendliest person of them all.” God created you and loves you. Don’t be afraid to look at the beautiful reflection and smile!
Your Friend, Holy Spirit!
