“Humpty Dumpty”

Hello Friends!

I was thinking the other day about an nursery rhyme that my mom used to say to me. It involved a person sitting on a wall, possibly shaped like an egg, and taking great fall. I think there were even horses and other people involved. Do you know the nursery rhyme? “Humpty Dumpty” is correct! Now how many of you could recite it right now?

Let’s say it together: Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall. Humpty Dumpty had a great fall; All the king’s horses and all the king’s men couldn’t put Humpty together again. How about one more time: Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall. Humpty Dumpty had a great fall; All the king’s horses and all the king’s men couldn’t put Humpty together again.

Very good! Did you notice that in addition to the King’s men that even the King’s horses tried to put Humpty Dumpty back together again. I have never seen a horse do anything like that before….Have you? Anyway, I was thinking about this nursery rhyme the other day because I stumbled upon a person named Jeremiah while I was reading the Bible. Jeremiah is a prophet who was chosen by God to help the Israelites realize that what they were doing was bad; and God didn’t like what they were doing. So God told and sent Jeremiah to go help the people. God sent Jeremiah like God sends us at times to help our parents, our grandparents, our cousins, our aunts and uncles, our sisters and brothers, and even our friends. The Israelites needed help, and Jeremiah was on the rescue.

While listening to God share about the Israelites, Jeremiah heard God say, “The people are like broken cisterns.” Cisterns are used to hold lots of water. You can think of cisterns like cups. And the people appeared to be broken, lost, confused, and unsure about what to do. The people have taken a great fall and have not been put back together again. The Israelites are like Humpty Dumpty. But unlike Humpty Dumpty, the Israelites can repent and go back to God, if they choose.

This story, in Jeremiah, reminds me that even when I feel broken or hurt or lost or even confused, I can lean on God and God can put me back together again. Even after great falls and bad crashes, God is going to be there. God is going to help heal you, strengthen you, and uphold you when you feel broken and your faith leaks through the cracks. This week, I want you to know that if you find yourself sitting on a wall and having a great fall, God is going to be there to put you back together again because He loves you. God is with you!

Your Friend, Holy Spirit!
