Let’s Go Fly a Kite

A March message for the kids.

The month of March is just about to blow past us, and I haven’t had a chance to fly a kite yet! Have you? When I was teaching 3rd grade, the month of March always had me getting out the record player and my Mary Poppins album to play the song, “Let’s Go Fly a Kite”. (One student thought the 33rpm record was a giant CD! lol!! Only parents and grandparents will get that!) We all sang…

Oh, oh, oh!
Let’s go fly a kite
Up to the highest height!
Let’s go fly a kite and send it soaring
Up through the atmosphere
Up where the air is clear
Oh, let’s go fly a kite!

…then we made kites to hang in the room. The kites “flying” in the room weren’t the same as flying a real kite, but I still liked having them in the room. I remember flying kites as a kid and flying kites with my own kids and watching other people fly kites at beaches and parks. I was always fascinated by the way those kites hung in the air, like magic. (But, of course, it isn’t magic. It’s the wind.) Sometimes the kite would take a dip, and I thought it would crash; but it would go back up. But, yes, sometimes it would crash. Crashes occur when the user doesn’t know how to work the kite in the wind…so my kite crashed a lot.

In the Bible, John 3:8 gives us Jesus’ words, “The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” God, the Holy Spirit is like the wind. His spirit is here with us even though we cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. We can be like a kite that depends on the wind, but we are depending on the Holy Spirit. We can soar, or we may crash; but we will be surrounded with the grace and forgiveness of God. Doesn’t that just BLOW you away? Thank you, God! Now…let’s go fly a kite!
