The Golden Rule Changes The World

Hello Friends,

Well, did you make it through your first full week of school? Are any of you tired, worn out, or ready for summer vacation? After my first week of school, no matter what grade I was in, I was always tired after the first full week of school. There was so much to learn, so much to memorize, so many things to keep track of, and always remembering when snack time was. There was just so much to make my brain tired; so by the end of my first week of school I was tired and worn out. I don’t think I was ready for summer vacation, maybe Christmas break, but never ready to leave school after the first full week of school. So I hope you have gotten some sleep because Monday is just around the corner!

Last week, as a church, we talked about “The Golden Rule”: “Do unto others as you would have them do to you” or “Treat others the way you want to be treated.” Did any of you treat your friends with love, kindness, and compassion this past week? Did any of you get upset with your friends? Jesus needs us to care for our friends, for our parents, for our siblings, and for all those in our life (Matthew 7:12; Luke 6:31). But it’s tough sometimes to be nice to everyone all the time. Growing up, I wasn’t nice to my siblings all the time and they certainly weren’t always nice to me. But at the end of the day, I still find it in my heart to love them, to give them kindness, to show compassion to them, and to be there for them. When we learn to treat others the way we want to be treated, we are helping God make sure that people smile and laugh and give hugs. When we treat others the way we want to be treated, we remind people that they are loved. When we treat others the way we want to be treated, we bring goodness to the world. I don’t know about you, but I certainly enjoy when there is goodness around.

If you are willing to treat others the way that Jesus wants you to treat others–with love, kindness, and compassion–then I guarantee, Jesus will love you more than he has loved you before. Jesus is never going to stop loving you; but when you do his work, he loves you just a little bit more. And to show you that all of us here at the church love you, we promise to always love you, be there for you, and embrace you through whatever you may be going through. Your church family is here for you, just like you are there for your friends, parents, siblings, and everyone else.

Remember, when you treat others the way you want to be treated, you will change the world!

Your Friend, Holy Spirit!
