Our Freedom: Thank You Veterans

Just a couple of days ago, we celebrated a specific holiday that honors all those who have served our country. They either served in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, or Space Force. For some of us, we get the day off of school to celebrate this holiday and our parents get the day off as well. Do you know the name of the holiday we just celebrated? That’s right! Veterans Day!

I was doing some research on Veterans Day and this is what I found out: Veteran’s Day originated as “Armistice Day” on November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I (1914-1918). (Way before you were born!) Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and November 11th became a national holiday beginning in 1938. In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially changed the name of the holiday from Armistice Day to Veteran’s Day (www.history.com). And today, 2021, Veteran’s Day is a day in which we honor and give thanks to all veterans of all wars.

Because these brave men and women sacrificed themselves to protect each of us, we are able to experience what is called freedom. We have freedom of speech–to say things kindly and respectfully. We have freedom to gather–to worship where we want. We have freedom of religion–to believe in an all-powerful God. And we have freedom to question those who are in charge. We have these freedoms because of the millions of men and women who sacrificed themselves to protect these freedoms. Isn’t that awesome! Like Jesus said in the Gospel of John, “[And] you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free” (John 8:32). The truth is that our freedom comes from millions of people being willing to fight and protect us. Just like the Veterans did. This is why we honor our Veterans today.

Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans—living or dead—but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime. Today, you are encouraged to pause and give thanks to all veterans whether living or deceased. Simply say “Thank you” to a veteran.

Let’s pray for the Veterans: Dear Lord, today we honor our veterans who gave their best when they were called upon to serve and protect their country. We pray that you will bless them for their unselfish service in the continual struggle to preserve our freedoms, our safety, and our country’s heritage, for all of us. Amen.
